Suan, Lapid shine in 12th Oro Open Golf Tournament

JUN Suan and Michael Lapid shared the limelight in the 12th Oro Open Golf Tournament concluded here recently at Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club.

Suan opened up with 38 on the first day then improved with 29 to post a total gross of 67, while Lapid came up with 84 for the overall lowest net in the friendship tourney organized by the Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro.

Miguel Chiong won the Class A division title with 39, followed by Danny Martin and Rolly Uy who had 38 and 37, respectively.

It was also a close fight for the Class B title as Jun Go Jr. edged Jun Papandayan, 42-41 with Jerry Limbonhai settling for the third place honor.

Pocholo Ponce de Leon, meanwhile, nosed out Rey Jampit and Arwin Kho for the Class C plum, even as Macoy Dimaporo carded a 42 to beat Cesar Merias (41) and Judix Nagtalon (40) for the Class D diadem.

This, as Lee Myung Jin showed too much class when she delivered a 39 to outshine Jang Yang Hee (34) and Kristene Leonen for the ladies’ division crown.

Around 250 parbusters from the Match Clubs of Zamboanga, Davao, Cebu, Makati and Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental saw action in the three-day golfest.

Rotary Club of West president Ladislao "Laddie" P. Zarsuelo said the Oro Open is the club's annual major fund-raising activity for its current and forthcoming livelihood and community projects for Rotary Year 2011-2012.

Proceeds of the tourney, Zarsuelo said, will be used to implement the club's various community projects such as the Most Outstanding Public School Teacher Award-MOPSTA 2012; completion of a 2-classroom school building at the Linangohan Elementary School in Tablon, Cagayan de Oro City; UPLIFT Scholarship Program for 16 public high school students; construction of a Ferro-Cement Water tank with a capacity of 10,000 liters; and construction of a hand washing facility for public schools. TRI-DISTRICT SEAMLESS SEMINAR A SUCCESS

The Seminar hosted by the club last September 17, 2011 was a complete success with the attendance of more than 300 Rotarians. Rotarians from as far as Antique, Zamboanga City, Tagbilaran and Tagum were in attendance.

District 3860 led by DG Nonoy Villa Abrille had a very big delegation coming from almost all the areas covered by the district like Leyte, Bohol, Surigao, Agusan, Davao, General Santos, Cebu and Davao del Sur. District 3850 led by DG Melvin de la Serna was well represented as well by Rotarians from as far as Zamboanga City and Zamboanga del Norte.

Not to be outdone, District 3870 led by DG Sam Fontanilla as host District also had a good attendance coming from all the zones.

The seminar went smoothly conducted by well known speakers like PDG Lyne Abanilla and PDG Chit Lijauco who discussed Public Image, PDG Bobby Viray for The Rotary Foundation, PDG Dave Villanueva for Membership, assisted by PDG Toto Cupin and PDG Mac Hermoso.

Our members also came out in numbers and actively participated in handling the seminar. Particular recognition is given to the ladies who were kept busy at the Registration Center.

Acknowledgement is also given to STI and staff for providing the the registration paraphernalia, San Miguel Brewery for the beer, and Smart Communications for the prizes.

This is VP Elmer Francisco of the Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro. On September 2, 2011, Friday 12noon at The VIP Hotel Casa Real, we would have the honor of being the audience of our Honorable Congressman Maximo 'Maxie' B. Rodriguez of Abante Mindanao, who is also a Rotarian from our daughter club RC Uptown CDO. We would witness his stands on various issues, bills sponsored in Congress and his programs and projects for our beloved City of Cagayan de Oro. Simultaneously, we would also have the induction of new members. In line with this, we are again inviting our Inner Wheel Club of West Cagayan de Oro and our daughter clubs for this occasion: Rotary Club of Uptown CDO, Rotary Club of Centerpoint CDO, Rotary Club of Carmen Valley and Rotary Club of Carmen Valley West. Assessment is P250.

For the forth coming club meetings, we would be lining-up our congressmen and other relevant great guest speakers so that we could determine our common goals where we could cooperate to better serve our city; thus, our country. On September 9, 2011 Friday 12noon, we would be graced by Honorable Congressman Benjo Benaldo of the First District of Cagayan de Oro. On September 16, we would move our club meeting to September 17 during the Rotary Tri-District 1st Seamless Seminar. For the coming months, we have also invited Atty. Adel Tamano, Mayor Dongkoy Emano, Cong. Bambi Emano, Cong. Peter Unabia, Cong. Rufus Rodriguez, Sen. Koko Pimentel, Sen. TG Guingona, Sen. Manny Villar and VP Jejomar Binay.

VISA REISSUANCE PROGRAM (VRP)

As of July 25, 2011, some visa applicants may be eligible for an appointment through the U.S. Embassy in Manila's Visa Reissuance Program (VRP). If qualified for a VRP appointment, applicants need only to schedule an appointment, appear at the Embassy at the appointed time, and then have the application screened and give 10-print fingerscans. No need for an interview, and appointments are available within a few days! To qualify for the VRP, you must be able to answer "yes" to all of the following:

1. I am a Philippines passport holder.

2. I have previously been issued, in Manila, a full-validity visa (a visa good for five or ten years).

3. My visa is still valid... or it has expired within the last twelve months.

4. I have in my possession all of my passports covering the entire period of time since I received that full-validity visa.

5. I have not been refused a U.S. visa in the last twelve months.

6. My visa is not annotated "clearance received".

7. I have not ever stayed in the U.S. longer than 6 months (even if the Department of Homeland Security approved the extension of stay).

8. I have not ever been arrested or convicted for any offense or crime, even if subject of a pardon.

9. I can provide the visa control number from my visa (located in the upper right hand corner of the visa).

If you are able to meet all of the above conditions, you are eligible for a VRP appointment. Please go online or contact the call center to schedule the VRP appointment.

Important Reminders:

1. The U.S. Embassy in Manila reserves the right to interview any applicant. If an interview is required, a representative of the U.S. Embassy will contact the applicant within two business days of his/her VRP appointment.

2. If you schedule a VRP appointment, but are not actually eligible for a VRP appointment, you will be turned away at the Embassy and asked to schedule a regular appointment. Please make sure you are eligible for a VRP appointment based on the above criteria.

Dear Fellow RC West CdeO Rotarians and friends!

Many thanks for your active participation in our Club Assembly on July 13, 2011. The very spirited discussion on the proposed projects to be undertaken by our Club in RY 2011-2012 was indeed a monumental one. Such planned undertakings in terms of its relevance, are in line with the overall program of Rotary International both at our Club level, in particular, and that of the District, in general. We will continue with our Club Assembly on July 20 to take up other proposed projects in the pipeline intended for implementation by our Club in the RY 2011-2012.

I find such interest and enthusiasm among the RC West CdeO Rotarians relative to our planned Club activities to be very inspiring and indeed moral boosting! These are clear indications of each and every member’s desire and commitments to make things happen. And to ensure that RC West Cagayan de Oro remains on track to fulfilling its vision of being the premier club of RI District 3870. Thanks to VP Elmer Francisco and Sec. Liza Minosa et al, for your superb coordination efforts in making our weekly meetings and fellowships a memorable and enjoyable one.

In our first Board Meeting for RY 2011-2012, PP Bobby Sebastian was appointed Chairman for the Tri-District Conference for Public Relations to be held in Cagayan de Oro City on September 17, 2011 with RC West Cagayan de Oro as the Host Club. Such event will gather Rotarians from all three RI Districts in the Visayas and Mindanao areas, namely 3850, 3860 and 3870. For such a huge undertaking, PP Bobby will be assisted by VP Elmer Francisco and PR Director Jill Santos-Cua as Co-Chairmen. Likewise, in the same meeting the new schedule for our 12^th Oro Open Golf Tournament as proposed by our energetic AG/IPP Edong Espiritu is confirmed to be on September 15-18, 2011 at Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club. Fellow RC West CdeO Rotarians, let us all rally our wholehearted support behind the men and women of our Club tasked with the responsibility to lead us in these forthcoming BIG events!

For the information of all RC West CdeO Rotarians, an advisory from DG Sam Fontanilla announces that a Membership Seminar for Zones 1, 2 and 4 is scheduled on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 9:00AM to 5:00PM at Maria Cristina Hotel in Iligan City. Participation to such seminar is a MUST to the Club President, President-Elect, Secretary, Chair-Membership Committee, Chair-Club Administration Committee, New Members, District Officers/Zone Coordinators. All Rotarians are likewise, encouraged to attend in such seminar. We will disseminate details of such activity as soon as they are received from the host club, RC Iligan-Maria Cristina.

I would be remiss of my duty as the incumbent Club leader if I fail to give the rightful recognition to our ever-faithful and loyal founding father of RC West Cagayan de Oro, the recognized Mr. Rotarian himself in this part of Australasia Region of Rotary International, our Charter President PDG Cocoy Velez and his beautiful and charming Lady Sofing. My dear members of RC West Cagayan de Oro and guest, good evening!

Our maiden Club meeting for RY 2011-2012 held on July 6 was indeed a big success. Our attendance was remarkably high at 53% … a very good start and superb indication of our Club members’ determination to keep RC West Cagayan de Oro, the premier club of RI D-3870. To you fellow members, thank you most sincerely for your active participation in the meeting and fellowship that we have had that evening. While this Club leadership appreciate and was elated by such high attendance, we are likewise melancholic for missing the company and camaraderie of our other members who did not

make it our first meeting. You may not have been with us physically in such event but I know pretty well that you are with us in spirit. Nevertheless, we missed you, guys very much! Please do come to our next Club Meetings, we assure you that we will not leave any stone unturned so to speak, to make such weekly event a truly enjoyable one and at the same time a real opportunity for a wholesome fellowship with all members of RC West Cagayan de Oro.

Fellow RC West CdeO Rotarians, it is my distinct privilege to report to you on the following events that occurred this week

involving our Club:

1. Meeting with DG Sam Fontanilla on Saturday, July 9 at the Southwinds Hotel this city. Such powwow dealt with the forthcoming Tri-District Conference for Public Relations. Such big event to be participated by all Rotarians in RI Districts 3850, 3860 and 3870 will be held on September 17, 2011 in Cagayan de Oro City with RC West Cagayan de Oro as the host Club. In this meeting, DG Sam remitted to our Club the amount of Twenty Thousand Pesos (Ps20K) as seed money for the Club to proceed with the preparations for the Tri-DisCon for PR. Thanks to VP Elmer, my ever-reliable Chief of Staff who ably coordinated such meeting.

2. Our Joint Outgoing & Incoming Board Meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, July 13 at 12Noon, VIP Hotel. Among the agenda set for discussion is the actual turn-over of financial records and other matters of concern to the Club.

3. Club Assembly will be done on Wednesday, July 13 at 6:30pm at VIP Hotel. The main item lined up for action is the individual representation of Directors-incharge of various working committees. The activity plan of each working committee will be discussed in detail for the approval of the Club Assembly.

4. Preparation for the 12th Open Golf Tournament scheduled on September 15-18, 2011 is under way. IPP Edong is in the thick of such preparation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for coming to the meeting.

Good evening! Tonight is indeed a very special occasion for all of us. The reason being such event is our maiden meeting for RY 2011-2012.

Once again, we will make this first get-together another opportunity to reflect well on the state of our club. It can be recalled that in our Club Leadership Planning Session on June 4, 2011, candid questions were raised that pushed us with firm resolve to address them squarely to keep our Club on track in the pursuit of our vision ...where we envisioned to be the premier Rotary Club, proactive in the delivery of excellent service. Such task ahead of us is indeed great and appears to be heavy and insurmountable! But with this Clubʼs proven ability to make things happen, coupled with our commitment to working together once more, your new Club leadership firmly believe that we can continue confidently to move forward to greatness!

District-wide celebration (with emphasis on the 5th Avenue of Service, the New Generation) Rotary International New Year was observed on Friday, July 1, 2011. In line with this, the RC West Cagayan de Oro in collaboration with its ever-faithful partner, the

IWC of West Cagayan de Oro visited some 25 toddlers who are housed in the brand-new school building this Club has donated to the Linangohan Elementary School located in the rural area of Barangay Tablon this city. The very young boys and girls were treated with goodies such as backpack-type school bags, sandwiches, pizza, etc. Such gift items were made possible through the kind hearts of RC West CdeO Rotarians and IWC West CdeO Inner-wheel Club Members.

Finally, my special thanks to our ever-loyal Charter President PDG Cocoy Velez, and to all past and incumbent IWC West CdeO officers and members, RC West CdeO Rotarians who despite their hectic schedules, have generously shared their time and material resources to make such event a BIG success!

Rotary District Conference: The Annual Reunion

FAMILIES have annual reunions; Rotary International (RI) districts have annual district conferences (discons).

The discon somehow serves as a reunion for Rotarians if one has been with the organization for quite some time. He gets to build long-term friendships there, provided he clicks with the group, for there’s still such a thing as camaraderie. Or maybe chemistry. If he’s the type who keeps the group united because they would all love to strangle him, he becomes the pariah that makes everyone else cringe. That’s why recruitment is very important. A club should recruit quality members and not merely to meet the membership rate increase promised to the district governor.

There are times when one has been with another organization for several years. Then, he gets invited to join the Rotary, and once he’s in, he recruits his friends from the other organization. There are many Rotarians whose decades-long friendships have been built through joining the many clubs that hanker for his membership and that’s probably the one main ingredient that can keep a club going and going and going like the Energizer bunny.

One can easily say no to commitments sought by a new acquaintance, but saying no to a long-time friend is difficult. That friend could already be his kumpare, kumare, their children have also become close friends or even married to each other, so how can he ignore the other’s SOS pleas for yet one more Rotary project?

Rotary International has noted that the membership hasn’t really increased worldwide. It has remained as is, at 1.2 million, for many years now, meaning, if one Rotarian is inducted, there’s one also lying low from his club. It’s merely offsetting, not increasing. With the economic crisis becoming the favorite excuse for all the ills in the world nowadays (who knows, swine flu would one day exclaim, Blame it on the crisis!), it has also become a eureka moment for some Rotarians to vanish from their clubs.

Commitment is a heavy word. It involves committing one’s time to the club and the organization. But it becomes light when he realizes how that time is spent. Rotarians work hard and play hard. Usually, it’s the “play” that non-Rotarians notice, since Rotary clubs forget to let the public know about their projects. The discon, for example, is one Rotary activity that’s getting a lot of publicity. And most probably people are now thinking that’s all the Rotary does—to meet annually and hobnob with the “rich and famous.” What they don’t see are the projects that each Rotary club commits to each year.

The discon is the district’s grand finale for the Rotary year. This is the “play” part. This is one way it keeps the music playing. If family reunions usually happen during the Christmas season, RI discons may be held whenever the district wishes, as long as it doesn’t conflict with other RI assemblies and doesn’t fall either eight days before or after the RI world convention. Since each Rotary year starts in July and ends in June, any weekends from March to May seem ideal to give the hosts enough time to prepare, and also to enable the clubs to make their annual reports to qualify for the district awards.

For the term of District Governor Rhia Rita Y. Abalos, her club the Rotary Club of West Cagayan is hosting Discon ‘09, with Past Pres. Eduardo Alaba as Discon chair. It will be held on May 15-17, 2009 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant, Lim Ket Kai Center, Cagayan de Oro.

RC of West CDEO honors unsung heroes

THE Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro continues its distinctive mark of honoring unsung heroes in Northern Mindanao.

And this year, Exquil Bryan Aron from Iligan City East High School bagged the Most Outstanding Public School Teacher Award (MOPSTA), held annually by the club to honor public teachers around Northern Mindanao.

The 32-year-old teacher said the award has been unexpected, and that when it was given during the awarding ceremony last May 4, he originally intended to attend a doctorate class in Math Ed at Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Aron has been teaching high school math for 10 years, and has been mixing Information Communication Technology (ICT) in his class to capture the students’ interest.

“I believe that education is now a lot different as in the last 20 years,” he said, adding that teachers should cope with the changing times and should teach the students to become globally competitive.

According to Court of Appeals Justice Romulo V. Borja, a Rotarian for 40 years, MOPSTA has been going on for 28 years, albeit there were gaps during the entire period. The award has been running for 12 years straight now.

“We are giving honors to our unsung heroes...and they are the teachers—the most underappreciated, underpaid, and overworked,” said Justice Borja, who heads the Gigi Borja Memorial Fund, the mother sponsor of MOPSTA.

MOPSTA, Borja said, is to inspire the teachers to abide by their code of excellence.

Rotary International District 3870 Governor Rita Abalos agreed.

“Awards like this make our teachers feel that they are valued, that they are recognized, even in our own little ways,” Governor Abalos said.

She added: “We are now professionals because we have caring teachers...and I’m very close to them because my mother is a classroom teacher, too.”

According to PP Eileen San Juan, the screening process lasted six months from the announcement in October 2008, selection of finalist by December 15, and screening by January.

The award carries with it a hefty purse of P50,000 prize and a PC set for the winner’s school. Other awardees include: Gresenia A. Rafols of Bugo Central School (1st runner-up) and Ma. Dulce F. Cuerquis of East City Central School (2nd runner up), who received P20,000 and P15,000 respectively.

They topped five other finalists: Delia D. Acle of Mahinog Elementary School, Camiguin; Jinky Arnejo, South City Central School, CDEO; Anna Liza Ocaya, Suntingon Elementray School, Bugo, CDEO; Patrocinia Menciano, West City Central School, CDEO; and Julieth Lacson, Bayabas National High School, CDEO. They all received P3,000 as consolation prize.

Six semi-finalists also received P1,000 cash prize.
